Description
The natural abalone pearl in this pendant is an oval, 12 by 9mm, and it carries the swirling blue, green and silver iridescence that makes abalone one of the rarest natural pearls. It was gathered from wild abalone in the cold Pacific waters off Mendocino, California, where each pearl forms with a color pattern entirely its own. A 0.03 carat diamond, 2mm in size, adds a single touch of sparkle, and the whole piece is worked in warm 14K yellow gold.
The pearl at its heart can’t be repeated, so this pendant from Richard Lewis’s Santa Rosa studio is genuinely one of a kind, made by hand. Abalone pearls are organic and on the soft side, so they need a gentle routine: keep yours away from perfume, hairspray and household chemicals, never clean it in an ultrasonic device, and store it apart from harder gemstones to guard its glow.
