Description
A pear-shaped natural abalone pearl, 13 by 11mm, sits at the center of this pendant, its surface alive with the shifting blues, greens and silver sheen that abalone pearls are known for. It was harvested from wild abalone in the cold Pacific off Mendocino. These are some of the rarest natural pearls anywhere, and each shows a color play found nowhere else. A single 0.03-carat diamond, 2mm across, sits beside it like a drop of light, all held in warm 14K yellow gold.
Every abalone pearl pendant Richard Lewis makes in his California studio is one of a kind, because the pearl at its center can never be duplicated. Abalone is an organic gem, softer than crystalline stones, so it asks for gentle handling: keep it away from perfume, hairspray and chemicals, leave ultrasonic cleaners well alone, and store the pendant apart from harder pieces that might mar it.
