Description
This pendant centers on a large cushion-shaped natural abalone pearl, 19 by 17mm. Pulled from wild abalone in the cold Pacific waters off Mendocino, California, abalone pearls are among the rarest natural pearls there are, and at this size the iridescence is striking, sweeping through blue, green and silver with every turn. A 0.2-carat sapphire, 3.5mm across, brings a jewel of deep color to the design, joined by diamond accents that scatter bright highlights, all set in warm 14K yellow gold.
Richard Lewis makes the piece by hand in his California workshop, and it’s one of a kind, since no two abalone pearls ever share the same play of color. As an organic gem, abalone is softer than its sapphire and diamond companions, so handle it with care. Keep it away from perfume, hairspray and chemicals, never use an ultrasonic cleaner, and store it apart from harder stones.
