Description
This clamshell-form opal fans open like a scallop shell. It’s a 3.34-carat freeform, 16 by 14 millimeters, from the Lambina fields of South Australia, and its sculptural ridges catch and scatter the play-of-color, sending a shifting spectrum across each fold. Five diamond accents totaling 0.07 carats, graded VS1 in G color, trace the design with points of light. The opal is held in an 18K yellow gold bezel and hung from a 14K white gold bail, a two-tone pairing that frames the stone beautifully. Richard Lewis shaped it by hand, and there’s no other quite like it.
This opal pendant hangs as a focal piece, its unusual shape a conversation in itself. Natural opal calls for gentle handling. Keep it away from ultrasonic cleaners and hard knocks, and wipe it now and then with a soft, damp cloth to keep every fold of color alive.
