Cut as a flowing freeform measuring 24 by 5 millimeters, this 2.5-carat Coober Pedy opal carries the rolling play-of-color the South Australian fields are known for. Its irregular silhouette lets the color drift and pool across the surface, never quite settling on a single hue. A 0.05-carat round diamond, 2.4 millimeters across and graded VS1 in G color, sits alongside as a clean point of brightness, all held in 14K yellow gold. Richard Lewis shapes each piece by hand, so this opal answers only to its own pattern of fire.
He handcrafts it in his Santa Rosa studio, and this opal pendant hangs as a graceful focal piece, slim enough to feel everyday yet full of movement. Treat the opal as you would any fine natural stone: avoid ultrasonic cleaners and sharp knocks, and wipe it with a soft cloth to keep the color singing.
