The stone is the standout here, a large 4.19-carat Ethiopian opal cut as a 14 x 11mm oval and set in sterling silver. At this size the gem has plenty to show, its broad face awash in the vivid, bright play-of-color Ethiopian opals are known for, with flashes of fire shifting and reshaping as the light moves over it. The sterling silver setting stays understated and gives the opal room.
Richard Lewis handcrafts this opal ring, and like all his work it’s one of a kind, with a color play that belongs to this stone alone. It comes in US ring sizes 3.5 to 7.5. Opal is comparatively soft, so gentle wear is best. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and hard knocks, and clean it with a soft cloth. Ethiopian opal can absorb liquids, so keep it away from prolonged water and oils.
