Mining for Opals: Inside the Australian Opal Fields

Opal mining explained: underground shafts, noodling, and the miners I buy rough from directly, from a working goldsmith.

Ask me how opal is mined and I have to disappoint anyone hoping for a story about big machines and open pits. Most fields still work close to the way they did seventy years ago: a shaft, a hand pick, a headlamp, and a lot of dirt moved by one person or a small crew hoping the next bucket shows color. I buy my rough straight from these miners and field dealers, no middleman in between, so what happens at the bottom of that shaft matters to me as much as anything that happens later at my bench. Mining for opals is one of the last gem trades where a single miner with almost no capital can still turn up something worth real money, and that fact shapes everything about how the stone gets out of the ground and eventually onto my bench.

Why mining for opals never went industrial

Big mining companies run on predictable grade: a gold reef or a diamond pipe can be drilled, sampled and modeled before a single ton comes out. Opal does not cooperate. It sits in thin, scattered seams that show no pattern from one meter to the next, so there is no reliable way to model a claim before you dig it. That uncertainty is exactly why the majors have stayed out and the ground has stayed in the hands of individual miners and small family operations, working modest claims a few dozen meters across under a miner’s right. How opal is mined underground

Most Australian opal still comes from underground. A miner sinks a shaft, often with a mechanical auger now rather than hand tools alone, down to “the level,” a band of sandstone where color is more likely to sit. From there the digging turns sideways into narrow drives, and a machine called a blower, essentially a giant vacuum mounted on a truck, sucks the loose rock (mullock) up and out so the miner can keep working the face by headlamp, watching for the faint trace of color that means a seam is close. The stone itself formed over a long stretch of geologic time before anyone ever sank a shaft: opal like this forms over millions of years, one thin band at a time, a process I walk through in how opals are made. Open-cut fields and noodling for missed color

Not every field goes underground. In parts of Queensland the opal-bearing ironstone sits close enough to the surface that miners strip the overburden with excavators instead of sinking a shaft, which is the method behind most boulder opal. And on the old underground fields, the work is never really finished the first time through. “Noodling” is picking back through the mullock heaps, by hand or with a mechanical washing and sizing plant, for color the original miner missed. It is popular with visitors at Coober Pedy and Lightning Ridge as a low-stakes hobby, though the serious noodlers treat it as its own small trade. Almost everything that comes up this way, whether from a fresh shaft or a decades-old dump, is common potch with no play of color at all, the difference I lay out in my definition of opal.

The people behind “opal hunters”

Television has made opal hunters look like treasure hunters one lucky bucket from a fortune. The reality is steadier and less cinematic. A miner can work a claim for months without a payable find, covering costs from a day job or savings, because there is no way to know a seam is there until the pick opens it up. That gamble, not a guaranteed payoff, is what actually defines the trade, and it is part of why opal has picked up so much folklore over the years, some of it more myth than fact, a subject I dig into in the meaning of opal.

From the ground to my bench

That direct buying relationship is where the stone actually starts for me. A parcel that comes to me straight off a claim looks nothing like a gemstone. It is dull, dusty rock, and the only way to know what is inside is to wet a face of it and tilt it under a light, looking for any hint of the flash that separates precious opal from everything else in the pile, the same optical trick I explain in how opal color actually works. What I am holding at that point is the same hydrated silica I describe in what opal actually is, just still waiting for someone to find the color inside it and cut toward it.

What responsible opal mining looks like

Australia produces most of the world’s precious opal, and it remains the country’s official national gemstone, according to Geoscience Australia. Because claims are small and worked by hand rather than by heavy open-pit equipment, the footprint of a single operation is modest compared to hard-rock metal mining, and Australian states require miners to rehabilitate a claim, filling shafts and leveling ground, once it is worked out. It is not a flawless picture, old unmarked shafts on abandoned ground are a real hazard, but it is a far smaller-scale industry than most people picture when they hear the word mining.
